Why make art? It doesn’t last. Why make music? The moment passes. Well….because it is a sign of the beauty and the hope and the ultimate purpose of human beings. It’s a reflection of the glory within and beyond ourselves. It’s a digging into buried treasure. It’s an expression of the beauty and hopes of humanity and the experience of creaturely existence and eternal longing.
If we are to value what we do only in monetary terms, this would be end of art, and the death of parts of ourselves that we actually need to touch the most. Art and worship are therefore intimately connected. Art making is like pouring perfume over the feet of Christ. The aroma fills our whole ‘house’. It’s call is in front of us on a daily basis – to spend ourselves on ultimate things, things that money cannot buy, pour out the deepest most precious things onto the feet of the divine. Weep, rage, laugh, play. It’s the deep calling to the deep.
